I guess his family is lucky that in 44 hours they didn’t manage to plant something.

From the story:

The sheriff’s office obtained a search warrant based on a tip from a thief who claimed he had found 20 grams of methamphetamine inside a bag he stole from a vehicle at Hooks’ home, Georgia station WMAZ reports. According to the warrant, Rodney Garrett claimed that he thought the bag was filled with cash but that he later discovered it contained meth. Garrett said that he then turned himself into the sheriff’s office because the drugs made him fear for his safety.

This just does not ring true. Why would a car thief (and meth addict….) fear for his safety over a measly 20 grams of meth? Why did’t he just throw the meth away then? Why would he turn himself in after successfully stealing the SUV? This whole story is bizarre.

And yeah, the whole SWAT procedure here seems totally unnecessary. SWAT teams should be reserved for terrorists with bombs and hostage situations where negotiations have not worked. Given how many armed US citizens we have, it puts both police and citizens protecting themselves from a perceived home invasion at risk when police storm in like that.

And what if they had found drugs? This would make an attack by police OK?

End prohibition now. Depending on the drug, use is either a safer alternative to alcohol, or a medical/psychological problem. Police should have nothing to do with health care issues.
