Domestic Violence a ‘Problem Everywhere,’ Experts Say - Chicago Tribune
With Rice’s arrest, suspension and NFL’s missteps in handling the situation, a portion of the country is already talking about domestic violence. But McMahon said his office deals with “remarkably similar” actions like Rice’s on a daily or at least weekly basis, but without the video evidence.
Kane prosecutors have charged 947 domestic battery cases this year, he said, and of the 15 murders charged in the county since 2011, 12 were domestic-related. That includes Sandra Baumgartner, arrested last week for stabbing her sister to death in Carpentersville.
McMahon’s office operates a domestic violence diversion program, which allows certain offenders the opportunity to undergo counseling rather than perhaps simply serve a minor jail sentence. Briefly “warehousing” someone who has committed domestic abuse does not address behaviors that need to be changed, McMahon said.
