Explaining Cory Gardner’s Mysterious Personhood Hypocrisy
One of the great mysteries of the election season is why Senate candidate Rep. Cory Gardner remains a co-sponsor of the federal “personhood” bill, which aims to ban some forms of contraception and all abortion, even for rape.
Gardner had no problem un-endorsing state personhood amendments, even though promoting personhood legislation was a foundation of Gardner’s political career. That is, before he ran for state-wide office and had to face down centrist women voters, who may not like the idea of banning birth control or abortion.
But he passed up his chance to have his name struck from the federal legislation, and now Gardner’s got the bill hanging over his head, leaving Democrats, in an ad released this week, saying, “Here’s what Cory Gardner says in Colorado … but here’s what he’s doing in Washington. Gardner is sponsoring a bill to make … all abortion illegal, even in the case of rape and incest … . Look it up yourself. You just can’t trust this guy.”
