I’ve met him in person.

His message was that to win a political fight for a radical cause, you needed to

(1) Dress, act, and speak in a conventional way. Be no sort of rebel in your personal life, hair, grooming, etc. apart from the issue at hand. So, if you’re black, dress white, speak white, etc. If you’re advocating for legalizing drugs, don’t use them yourself, wear your hair cut short, etc.

(2) Personalize the other side. Pick an individual and attack him in his own person. Don’t just argue in the abstract. This, of course, in a political sense. You wouldn’t throw coffee in his face or spit, much less shoot. That would violate rule 1.

I don’t remember the rest of it, but I concluded that I didn’t like it much but it looked to be more effective perhaps than the tactics of Mark Rudd, who went for shock value and probably lost ground politically even if he maybe did right well with the ladies.

I did not meet him. I only read his books and some stuff about him. But I think you’re paraphrasing here, at best. I’m pretty sure Alinsky would not say, ‘If you’re black, dress white, speak white’.

That’s the first Vox article that I didn’t find totally irritating. I hope to go back to watch the videos later.

Thanks for posting this.

I do get tired of the “One paragraph” or “Two charts” that explain everything (I did page one of those yesterday) but that seems to be so prevalent these days. Sometimes it’s somewhat accurate but I dislike that type of headline. Was it Buzzfeed that pioneered the whole “listicle” thing? Probably some other site that I’ve never heard of.

Generally, I have found Vox articles and videos to be informative.

Of course I’m paraphrasing. I cannot give a verbatim quote from several decades ago. But that was the sense of it. That was the lesson a black person, or a proponent of drug legalization respectively, would privately draw from it.

Saul Alinsky is a boogeyman for right wingers who need a boogeyman. Your average liberal doesn’t know who the hell Alisnky is. From the little I know about Mr. Alinsky, it seems that he advocated for racial equality and agaisnt things like Anti-Semitism. Why a guy like this is made out to be a right wing boogeyman I think really tells you a lot about what scares right wingers.
