Good for the judge. I think he made the right decision.

2 Dark_Falcon  Oct 11, 2014 7:52:00am

This doesn’t just happen in cases of murder.

To be clear, the case presented in this follow-up story is different in its legal proceedings: The stepfather who raped his stepson plead guilty, whereas the boy’s mother chose to to go to trial, where the jury and judge were not bound by the prosecutor’s recommendation for the same sentence as her son’s rapist. But it still was a very bad situation.

3 ProtectChildren  Oct 11, 2014 8:21:43am

The judge made a terrible decision. This woman should be in jail for the rest of her life. The violent murder of her daughter was not the first time he abused people in the house. If she had left at the first sign of him being crazy or violent, a child would still be alive. Whatever reasons she had for staying with him would have been fine with me if it were just her. She has an obligation as a MOTHER to put her child’s safety and well being ahead of anything else, including her own love life. I don’t care how “scared” she was to leave him. The worst has happened.

I have a daughter and there is absolutely no way I would ever let anyone harm her, much less kill her. They would have to kill me first.

Interesting side note: She got through the rendition of her daughter’s murder with no emotion in her voice.

Children of single parents who date and/or remarry have significantly higher rates of molestation, abuse, and death. Put your child first and your love life second.

Tell that to the Fathers, who put their ‘love life’ first and their children second. Or perhaps it’s a case of economics. Fathers without jobs can’t support their kids.

Having access to birth control is a key factor in being able to control the circumstances in which your child is born. The conservative right keeps slut shaming teh childrens who want to have access to birth control, before they have sex, so they don’t become parents while they are still *dating* as you say.

Now that’s the way to turn a victim, the woman into the perpetrator. My own foster daughter suffered through a case like this when her husband raped their two year old girl. His defense attorney tried to do what exactly what you are doing.

You mean the voice actress (probably a Buzzfeed staffer) that read the court transcript for Buzzfeed’s video? Did you seriously believe that this is an actual recording of the woman testifying?

You think this bland reading is what moved the judge and the prosecutor to have such sympathy for her? Good grief… :(

re: #7 Rightwingconspirator

Don’t get me wrong, the boyfriend should be executed. But the mother not only sat there and let it happen, she put her daughter and another child in that situation to begin with. That’s why it is considered a CRIME. Because she’s responsible to stop it. But, very typical to resort to name-calling rather than actually debating any of the facts.

^^This is only the same if the mother of your foster daughter watched him rape her daughter on more than one occasion and did nothing to stop it. So, it’s probably completely different.

Trolling the internet for the comments section replies is not typically how I spend my time. Impressive tactic several people have employed, though- Trying to silence an opposing view with repetitive vulgarity. It’s probably effective sometimes, too.
I will never stop speaking out to protect children. Think about that for a minute…. You’re actually telling someone whose only motivation is to protect innocent children to screw themselves. What kind of person does that make you? You (and other responders) are clearly not educated or analytical enough to have an actual response (NOT that I was looking for one), so I’m pretty much done here. But this was mildly entertaining for a few minutes.

good freakin grief.

Oh, and thank you so much for slandering women like my mother (in your second comment in this thread) who dared to date after my father left her with six children to raise on her own.

Cupcake, if your only motivation was to “protect innocent children” you would be screaming about the system that fails/refuses to prosecute abusers who have been reported repeatedly and fails to hear and protect those who are abused, beaten, and murdered no matter how often they plead for help. You would be supporting shelters that help women and their children escape and programs that help them get back on their feet.

Instead here you are, all self-righteous and superior, blaming a beaten down woman for another’s violent crime and insisting she pay with her life. Nope, not working. You are a part of the problem.

How sad that you didn’t take the time to familiarize yourself with the community here, many of whom have direct experience with this issue.

re: #18 ProtectChildren

I totally get why you are mad. And I do see you are passionate about protecting children. I think we all are though.

However, the voices you heard on this video, were not the actual voices of the people, they were voice over people reading the transcripts from the case. That is why she sounded a little disengaged.

Also, this was not the trial for the mother. This judge had presided over the Mothers trial earlier, but the Mother did not choose to argue for her innocence. She put in a guilty charge and was sentenced and that was all. She was so beaten down by the terror and abuse from this insane man and the horror of her daughters death she didn’t even try to fight for herself in court. It wasn’t until the same judge was presiding over the boyfriends case, and they brought her in as a witness against him, that the judge heard the whole story. What was told here was just the tip of the iceberg that the judge heard.

My mother used to volunteer for a woman’s shelter and there were so many women that were so terrified to leave. They stayed, not because they didn’t want to lose the boyfriend, but because they knew he would find them and kill them or even other immediate family members. There were so many women, that didn’t want to go to the shelter because they were convinced he would find them and kill everyone there! (abusers are very good at using death threats not only against the mother and child, but against her parents and friends, even coworkers!) And as you see from the news, many abusers make good on these threats, and a whole lot of people , including in laws, end up dead)

There were some women, who knew the only way they could get away successfully, is if they made a long term plan. Since money was always kept from them, they would hide a few dollars here or there, an amount they hoped he wouldn’t notice. Sending the kids away to live somewhere else was always a dead giveaway to a controlling abuser, that they were trying to leave him. Sometimes the plans would take a year or two. But sometimes, tragically, before the plans could finally be fully realized, someone would end up dead. Most of the time, it’s the mother herself that ends up dead before she could successfully get away with her kids. In this case, it was a child.
