OK I might come off as a bit of an asshole here, so if this offends you just pretend I’m playing devils advocate:

1. The entire “iphone as projectile” this is bogus. How many people have been seriously injured by flying phones?

2. I think flight attendants don’t like losing what little power they have. It annoys me to no end when a flight attendant wakes me up to “move my seat to the upright position.” Really, you mean move my seat a quarter of an inch because when the plane crashes that will make a fucking difference? The airlines should just admit they have been wrong about the entire electronic devices thing and leave people alone.

/rant over.

It will to the person behind you.

You don’t come off as an asshole, just self entitled. But that doesn’t make you any different than the vast majority of people on flights nowadays. If the flight attendants didn’t maintain some kind of control on flights, it would be anarchy. Because of people like you.

LOL fair enough. In my defense I’m not a dick on planes, I am always polite to flight attendants and have never been rude. I also dress nice and have been bumped up to first class on several occasions due to my niceness. I just feel the no cell phone or ipod rule is bullshit. But I do see your point.

I fail to see how these arguments against small electronics could not also apply to books. A hardcover book could do serious damage as a projectile in an emergency (as much as a phone or small electronic device), and someone reading will pay less attention to the safety briefing, and yet they have been allowed without question for years.

As someone who travels with a Kindle because it’s a whole lot easier than traveling with 10 books - and who does stop and pay attention to the safety briefing unless it’s the 4th flight in 2 days and therefore I check to make sure I know where my exits are and otherwise I am good - I can’t really get behind this.

re: #4 Boondocksaint

If a handheld object does become a projectile during takeoff, that means the flight is pretty fucked; takeoff and landing being the most difficult part of the whole flying process (leaving security out of the mix! :-D ) I would say that you should count your lucky stars that that has never happened.

But it could and I am sure that it has.

Most people have never been on a flight where the entire plane breaks out in applause once it’s wheels on the ground because the turbulence was bad enough that almost everyone on board thought we were not going to make it. I have been on two of those.

Flight attendants, while sometimes being colossal assholes, are not waitresses in the sky. They are trained to ensure maximum survival should an event happen. It is their job to make sure that everyone gets off the plane in the event of an event. To treat them as simply some waitress in the sky does everyone on board a disservice. We, the traveling public, should be thankful that they are there…and that we never need them to do their real jobs.

It should apply to books as well as electronic devices. Because a hardcover book is worse than an electronic device.

If they were pushing for that too, then I could at least see the logic behind it. But they’re not - just for the prohibition on small electronics to be reinstated.

That’s where I get irritated.
