The judge says it best.

Healey said Florida’s controversial “stand your ground” law was widely misunderstood.

“We should remember there is nothing wrong with retreating and deescalating the situation,” the judge said.

Outside court, Davis’ father, Ron Davis, said the judge sent a strong message.

“We may have in this state ‘stand your ground’ laws but that doesn’t allow you as a citizen, when you have a chance to diffuse a situation, for you to be so aggressive,” he told CNN by phone on Friday. “It’s basically saying to people, stop with the shoot first.”

Doing this takes a level of maturity that was lacking on Dunn’s part. His having a gun turned the situation tragic. When I was younger (but old enough to know better), I was in a couple of situations where I was too proud to back down when dealing with immature teenagers. Thankfully I didn’t have a gun or I might have made the same kind of mistake.

What turned the situation tragic was Dunn’s overweening self-importance and his racism. A sensible person with a CCW would have told the kids off and left it at that, but Dunn has an ego so huge that in his mind he was justified in using force to get his way. Dunn is also racist enough to assume any major movements by black teenagers could only be an attack in a situation like this.

So no, Lumberhead, if you’d had a gun this still would not have happened. You’re not the sort of racist egomaniac who would shoot a black teen dead because you didn’t like his music.

I’m afraid I have to disagree to a degree. His racism is probably what caused the confrontation but the gun is what turned it into a tragic, deadly encounter. Racism is not the only thing that can cause a confrontation with a group of Black teenagers. As an African-American man it would be unusual, but not impossible, for me to have racist feelings toward fellow African-Americans. That doesn’t preclude me from having a confrontation with a group of teenagers. Having a gun is what could lead to a fatal outcome.

This should not lead you to believe that I’m against gun ownership or CCW’s altogether.
