If you tune in to the TLC thinking it was “The Learning Channel”,,,,,,Ya’ll might be a Dum Dum.

And, unfortunately, it got worse:

Earlier today, TLC announced that it was canceling Here Comes Honey Boo Boo in the wake of rumors that Mama June was now dating an ex boyfriend who had just finished serving prison time for molesting an 8-year-old girl. According to TMZ, that 8-year-old girl was none other than Mama June’s daughter Anna, nicknamed “Chickadee.” Ugh.

TMZ reports that June had tried to hide her rekindled relationship with Mark McDaniel from her daughter (now an adult). But now, it appears, the jig is up.

Anna Cardwell — who is now 20 and married with a child — believed her mom earlier today that she was not dating the man who molested her. But we’re told Anna has now received a lot more info, and is now convinced June betrayed her by seeing McDaniel again.

Anna wants it known she’s the victim because it makes what her mom is doing all the more egregious. We’re told Anna feels her relationship with her mom has been destroyed, and the only way June can see her granddaughter is if McDaniel is nowhere to be seen.

I’m withholding judgement about that IQ point until:

1. I see people admit that maybe watching schadenfreude porn says as much about the viewer as the filmed.

2. People don’t immediately find some other shitty, canned “reality” star to follow, ironically or un-ironically.

3. There’s some deep introspection about how TLC’s cancellation is about optics, and not some kind of just desserts for that family, because we like wacky fucked-up-edness, not deeply tragic painful fucked-up-edness.

4. TLC aggressively whitewashes the lives of its other reality family, the Duggars. All of the creepy cultish Quiverfull stuff is carefully walked around. When watching Honey Boo Boo, has it ever occurred to viewers that the alternating laughs and sentimentality are text, but the family are not text? That what is not filmed might not be funny, but sad, or even frightening?

I’m being a killjoy, but I recently I’ve been bumping up against how rarely people exercise critique of their own spectating habits…not just watching the show, but how we consume a show through gossip, references, and mockery.
