Billy Don’t Care if You Don’t Like Guitar
Normally I don’t give music stock tips, but with this offering I’m issuing a solid buy recommendation. Billy Idol was brazen when he took that name but over his career he’s more than lived up to it, and his new album is no exception. His iconic voice growls through punk ballads and total big music arena rockers alike, and every song on this is worth your listening time. He exists in some timeless alternate universe somewhere between Doors style roadhouse, hard driving 80’s punk, and crooning rockabilly - so that instantly recognizable voice will also be remixed aplenty into EDM, dubstep, and cumbia hits, you can count on it.
While you are listening you could also read his new book, “Dancing With Myself”
Introspection never has been required from Billy Idol or even desired; he designed his stardom not to bother with such messiness as recognizable human emotions. Nevertheless, a veteran rocker with nearly four decades of experience behind him only has so many cards left to play, so it does makes sense that Idol devoted 2014 to a double-barrel blast of autobiography: a memoir naturally called Dancing with Myself paired with an album called Kings & Queens of the Underground. Confessions are bellowed throughout Kings & Queens but it never feels like they’ve been pushed to the forefront, not with Trevor Horn’s production creating a glassy arena rock cocoon.
