Maybe they can use them in place of those air bags that they put in boxes.

What’s a “fire phone”?

Ouch. A rare tech misstep for Amazon, but they’re getting into a market dominated by iPhone and Android; they needed to have a real killer product to play with the big boys, and they clearly didn’t.

They also tied themselves exclusively to AT&T which I don’t think did them any favors. I would have considered one when I came up for renewal if they had been on verizon.

Agreed. I think another major misstep was eliminating access to the Google Play Store, only the Amazon App Store was allowed. Cutting out Google Play meant cutting users off from a lot of popular apps.

I tinkered with a Fire at an AT&T store when it first released and realized Amazon had made extensive changes to the Android software. So much so that I, a veteran Android user, had a hard time figuring out what was where.

I really think Bezos had his eye on having his own little version of the iPhone.

Isn’t this just a loss on projected income?

Further, Amazon’s 3Q results included a $170 million write-down due to “Fire Phone inventory valuation and supplier commitment costs.”

These appear to be capital costs (new product is usually cap, not exp.) - so I assume the inventory part is the 83M worth of hardware, while the rest represents the total buy commitment with the supplier.
