Cook County Election Judges responsibilities:

Election judges have many responsibilities and perform several tasks on Election Day, including:
Opening the polling place at 6 a.m. sharp and closing it at 7 p.m.
Setting up election equipment
Providing assistance to voters
Signing in voters
Verifying voter qualifications
Distributing ballots/activation cards for touch screen machines
Operating voting equipment
Filling out forms
Processing and transmitting votes when polls close
Certifying vote totals

So a Republican who donates to Democratic candidates,

In the 19th Ward, he is known to maintain a cozy relationship with the local Democratic organization, even making political donations to them, although sources tell me he is not a wholly-owned subsidiary as is often the case.

robocalls Republican judges so that they won’t show up to the polls. Democratic tampering or Republican?

Democratic birthers???

Sources said Parrilli was working with Sharon Meroni, a Republican wingnut who considers herself a one-woman crusader against vote fraud in Illinois — in between her efforts to prove Barack Obama is not a U.S. citizen.

As the author points out, Chicago is an overwhelmingly Democratic city. Difficulties in voting are almost assuredly going to affect Democratic voters most of all.

Sharon Meroni did not partake in the Republican robo-calling in relation to telling the judges to show up on the wrong day. I was only referring to Jim Parrilli.

If there are no Republican judges to help the mostly democratic voters, who cares right!? They can go to the Democrat judges.

FTA:

The alleged consequence is that the phone calls sowed confusion among Republican election judges, causing large numbers of them to fail to report for duty Tuesday.

That in turn is alleged to have caused disruptions in polling places that either opened late or were understaffed — with the ultimate result that long lines caused voters to skip voting to avoid the hassle.

In Chicago, the vast majority of those who go to the polls vote Democratic. If you discourage voters from voting, that hurts Democratic candidates the most.

You listed all the things that the election judges do. If the Republican judges aren’t there then someone has to do the work.
