How Is President Obama Planning to Reform Immigration Policy Through Executive Action? - Everything You Need to Know About Obama
In summer 2014, President Obama announced that with immigration reform officially dead in Congress for the year, he would be taking executive action to change immigration policy on his own. President Obama directed administration officials to come up with recommendations, which he’d then choose whether or not to implement.
The president will be making major changes to immigration policy before the end of 2014. Some reports indicate that the move could come as early as next week. However, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid has asked the White House to hold off until Congress has passed a temporary government-funding bill, which will happen sometime before December 11th.
Immigration advocates are expecting Obama to expand relief from deportation, and possibly work authorization, to unauthorized immigrants. Relief could target as many as 5 million unauthorized immigrants; the most-frequently-mentioned groups for potential immigration relief are parents and spouses of US citizens.
