I’ve also long suspected that similar services exist for Billboard’s Top music lists as well.

You “suspect”?!?!

Every record label has an entire promotion department DEDICATED to working the charts. Most of them also hire independent promoters for new releases. The exact metrics of what it takes to get on the Billboard charts — which radio stations count for how much, which DJs report to the club charts, the weight each is given — are far from secret. (if you’ve ever wondered how a few particular club DJs get all the remix work… it’s because they report to the chart and the label wants their loyalty. Those are also the clubs where the hot acts do their “surprise” appearances).

Because everyone does it, that means the playing field is just as level as if nobody did it.

You miss the point — Billboard charts in the rarified atmosphere of top 200 also depend on total sales for ranking and appearance thereon, which means you can bulk buy your way onto the chart. That’s what’s happening, it goes beyond simple “promotion” and product placement.

Here’s one of the most telling parts of the article to me:

None of the authors involved responded to repeated requests for comment or explanation. Small and Yates also declined to comment.

They wouldn’t do this if they had nothing to hide. The fact is, companies like resultsource are used so frequently in the publishing business it’s actually rare to see books make the bestseller list without them.

It’s the same phenomena as companies who will pay marketers to post glowing reviews of their products online.

If there’s a system to be gamed, these people will figure out a way.

So religion is all about making money.

Who’d a thunk it?

Not only that, but willing to do whatever it takes. How Christian of them.

I remember the same story was true with Sarah Palin’s _Going Rogue_ back in 2009, SuperPacs would buy the book in bulk to boost its best-seller status and then send “free” copies to donors.
There are also companies that authors can pay to buy their book in smaller, more “organic” looking bulks to boost sales ratings - it’s called “Leapfrogging.” Amazon has gotten wise to this practice and won’t do business with those kinds of outfits, but looks like NYT is behind the times as usual.

Apparently Hillary chose not to go this route with her book (whatever it’s called) and wingnuts thought this meant she was “unpopular”
