I would like to believe there are many societies where rape is all but unknown, but there is a lack of specifics in the article which makes it impossible to check without finding a copy of the referenced book. I am also unclear whether this refers to rape within their own social group, but not to women of other groups, or if the men in these societies would never consider raping any woman, anywhere.

Since the prohibition of rape and the existence of rape both make an appearance on Donald Brown’s list of Human Universals, the 47% figure of societies without rape seems really high, even if rape isn’t actually universal.

Yes, culture plays a big role, and respect for women’s personal agency is a good thing and undoubtedly reduces the acceptability and hence frequency of rape, but I don’t think you can simply teach all men to respect women and have an end to rape.

I haven’t read the book, but she seems to be talking about societies with/without male dominance, not rape specifically (of course a 47% figure of societies without male dominance doesn’t seem very likely either, unless you’re really good at wishful thinking).

Where women are property, rape is a form of tresspassing.

The main problem is that Sanday analyzed the data on 156 (in her words) tribal societies (a sub-set of this list). So how can the columnist claim that “17%, of which we are one, were definitively rape prone”, if the “American society” hadn’t even been a research subject here?

The secondary, but also important problem is that those percentages apply only to those 95 societies out of 156 for which the data was available. The columnist implies that the percentages apply to the 150+ societies, which is clearly not true. That is, those 47% are actually 29% of the societies in the study.

Which is not to say that the results are not significant in their own way - there do seem to exist tribal societies with no rape culture.
