Back then it was Communists/Jews, nowadays it’s Creeping Sharia/Muslims. The ability to imagine a cabal of malevolent subversives lurking in every shadow, stealthily infiltrating America with malicious intent, doesn’t sound much different today than it did then. It doesn’t matter whether or not it makes sense—it’s intended to frighten & sow distrust about some malevolent “Other”, and it seems to (still) be quite effective at doing precisely that.

We apparently always need the ‘other’. Gives us something to unite around. Read Orwell’s Notes on Nationalism. It’s forever been, us and them.

A lot of the popular culture of the 30s-50s tended to cast businessmen, especially bankers, in a bad light. And a lot of it showed rich people in a bad light as well - greedy fathers, cold socialite mothers, and lazy unsympathetic idlers for children, who often had to be introduced to the harsher side of life.

It’s pretty funny and pathetic that they considered it a Communist subversive film since Capra and Stewart were both conservatives and also served their country honorably during WWII but hey we can’t have the ultra rich portrayed in a negative light right Edgar? And yes it’s always about the “other”, it’s been like that throughout world history.
