Cross-posted from 1st Scalise thread:

OT: This won’t end well: LAPD To Issue H&K MP7s to Motorcycle and K9 Patrol

There’s not much info there, but there is a photo of a female LAPD motorcycle officer carrying an MP7. It’s a full-auto Personal Defense Weapon (PDW, H&K’s term for it) that fires 4.6x30mm rounds from 30 and 40 round magazines.

The gunshot wound on his back showed the surrounding skin had a “muzzle imprint,”…

The autopsy does not make any judgment about the conduct of the officers in the shooting or provide a detailed narrative of what occurred.

Wha…?

Police testimony-says a fight that went to the ground, Ezell grabbed the service pistol and the cop shot him point blank in the back with his backup gun. So far nothing to contradict.

Cops can’t all be martial-arts experts. They can’t mostly be exceptionally large and fit. That means that there will be exceptionally large and fit civilians who can leverage that advantage with surprise.

A technological fix suggests itself: guns that simply won’t fire unless the right person is holding them. Holsters that not just anybody can open might be nice too.

Unless and until that happens, there’s bound to be instances where a crazy civilian ambushes the officer and gets to where he can win the fight unless the cop can bring his (or her!) gun into play to tip the odds their way.

And then, mixed into the now muddy waters, you have the cases where the cop went rogue or imagined a threat that wasn’t real. Without cameras, it can be hard to sort out what really happened, even with a good autopsy.

Nevermind that the department never explained why the officers approached Ford in the first place. Nevermind that there was more than one officer on the scene. Nevermind that according to the officers’ own accounts that Ford was shot twice before the gunshot to his back. Nevermind that they likely could’ve out-muscled him and subdued him. (btw, “martial arts” are typically a joke) Nevermind why they didn’t try using tasers or pepper-spray, opting to go straight for lethal weapons.

Nevermind any of that. Cops are justified in killing unarmed individuals by default. We’ve only got the officers’ accounts to go on, and that’s good enough for everybody familiar with the LAPD’s history.

/do I need to?
