What’s really bothersome if this time a lot of them are in the Senate. In 2010, we managed to avoid sending a lot of them to the Senate but this year we managed to send Ernst and Garner to the Senate. I swear they keep on finding people who are more and more genuinely nuts with views that would be perfectly at home in the BNP and other Eurofascist parties.

Tell me about it. This weekend I finished my book on antisemitism and started reading a book I had waiting in the wings called Blood and Politics: The History of the White Nationalist Movement from the Margins to the Mainstream.

It makes clear that all this crap is by design. It’s appalling and they’re playing for keeps—they don’t care if they have to burn down the entire country in order to keep their privilege, a privilege which they see as their right (a God-given one in the case of the Christian Right, with whom there’s a good deal of crossover).

They truly do see themselves (whites, Christians) as being oppressed, dispossessed, the only “real Americans”. It’s a zero-sum game for them—they don’t want to share, they want to be on top, in control. It’s a totally sick, twisted bizarre alternate universe, one that the GOP opened the door to. Now we all have to deal with it.

Going to look to read that book. I agree though. It’s sick and appalling.

For whoever wants to learn more about the backgrounds of the new congress critters, here’s a link to Wikipedia’s list of freshman class members of the 114th United States Congress.

As for the ones in the Salon article Randall linked to, for convenience I used Wikipedia’s “Download as PDF” feature to generate files for each, and then I combined them into a single PDF. The Wiki PDFs have bookmarks, so when combined they make a handy reference.

You can download the combined PDF from here. The new wingnuts are listed in alphabetical order. It just so happens that the first two are freshman Senators and the rest (with state & district listed) incoming freshmen to the House of Representatives.

In order to see the bookmarks you’ll need to download the PDF. You can do that by clicking on the downward pointing arrow that will be in the upper right corner of the window when viewing the file.
