The March to Zero State Income Tax
Kansas Governor Sam Brownback gave his State of the State address yesterday and he apparently intends to continue down the road to zero income tax.
Brownback has no intention of reversing course on his signature economic policy.
“For the past several weeks, we have been in consultation with government, business and industry leaders regarding our shared fiscal concerns. They have been generous with their time and frank with their advice. Tomorrow I will present to the Legislature a proposed two-year budget that is in balance — with revenues exceeding expenditures each year. And we will continue our march to zero income taxes,” Brownback told legislators.
So how does he plan on filling the budget gap currently estimated at 278 million dollars? He’ll raise taxes, just not income taxes.
A one dollar and fifty cents raise in the cigarette tax?!?! No doubt he and his apologists will tout his record of never raising taxes since income taxes seem to be the only taxes that count for conservatives. Is he actually planning to run for president?
We all know that this will affect low income folks the most but, for reasons I’ll never understand, the very same low income people either don’t get out and vote or continue to buy into these supply side fantasies.
