This is a totally unrealistic request, unless she’s willing to pay hundreds of thousands of dollars for an assembly line retool for a run of cameras that will appeal to a very small number of people. Rather than expecting Canon to take a huge loss for charity, she needs to buy or make a custom grip.

It might be possible to 3D print a reversed camera body and transplant the internals of a Canon to the new camera. This might even be something that would be profitable, but it’s not something Canon is equipped to do themselves. It would also feel pretty cheap in the hand, totally unlike a nice camera.

People have tried before to get companies to make cameras for left hands. I don’t know if this attempt will succeed, but I’ve often thought the ideal camera (and some of of the roll film cameras were like this) would not have handles on the side.

re: #1 No Country For Old Haters

I don’t think it would cost a whole lot of money to do what this person asks.

Well as I understand their process, the tooling would be very significant. You need a mirror image frame and button or two. A bunch of internal cabling and boards. But sure the works are all the same just relocated.

7d Mark II Body Parts

If they make a special and charge more they will get a PR black eye.

Then we get into what models. I would think the high end Rebel would be a good bet for them. If/when we get smartphone style controls on the back the button issue gets reduced.

Canon and Nikon have enough problems competing with the camera phone and mirrorless camera market. While pros will still use these large cameras, consumer DSLRs are heading towards the same fate as medium format cameras did before them. I doubt they’ll be putting any money towards making a niche product.

I’m with NCFOH & RWC on this one. I don’t see it happening.

As a left handed person, I have had zero problem adopting to the Canon set up.

I personally think this request is completely preposterous.

Because you have a right hand. This proposal would only really be helpful to people with only a left hand, which is a tiny market. This is why it’s an unreasonable request.

Fortunately some technical (if imperfect) solutions might provide help. Get an app to run the camera from a smartphone for instance. If budget allows a steadycam kinda thing would be pretty good.

This is what tripods and remote releases are made for, steadying yo’ shit.

Also, I just checked, and it’s quite easy for me to hold Nikon DSLRs (D300 & D810) up to my eye, using a vertical grip / extra battery pack, in the horizontal position using my left hand only, and trigger the exposure with my middle finger. However my hand is probably larger so it might be more awkward for her. Either way I wouldn’t recommend it in the field without a strap around my neck.

re: #10 goddamnedfrank

Oddly enough, it actually feels less fatiguing for me to do it that way (left hand under accessory vertical grip / battery pack) because my hand and arm are directly under the center of gravity and I’m not supporting the weight of my raised arm along with the camera.

Sounds like Canon could get goodwill points & publicity by working with this customer on an adaptation that will work for her. If they or someone else designs a device or add-on, they can 3-D print more of them in very tiny batches for the niche market…?
