Vicious Babushka,

This satire from the Onion would make a great pro vaccination ad.

I Don’t Vaccinate My Child Because It’s My Right To Decide What Eliminated Diseases Come Roaring Back

Parents need to be forced to vaccinate their children, because sometimes the child’s life may depend on it, and children aren’t mature enough to make the decision for themselves yet.

My uncle had the measles as a child and developed encephalitis, which left him profoundly mentally retarded, although he didn’t suffer hearing or vision loss. I honestly feel really sorry for the first kid you discussed, whose parents induced some kind of anti-vax hysteria around him. You CAN’T catch whooping cough from the vaccine they use for that, because the vaccine doesn’t contain actual pertussis bacteria. DTaP means diptheria, tetanus, acellular pertussis. Argh.

I know dealing with autism can be very difficult for parents, but the measles left my uncle in much worse shape than about 99% of kids with autism, and certainly way worse than all the people who now get diagnosed as being “on the spectrum,” which I believe is simply and expansion of our need to be able to define/diagnose folks whose personalities seem odd or quirky.

Dotty Hagmier, a former nurse and founder of a group called Moms in Charge, which aims to help mothers make informed choices, said she once saw those who didn’t vaccinate as “very irresponsible and putting others at risk.” But when doctors accidentally gave her child an extra dose of the vaccine for Hepatitis C, she realized she didn’t like being at the mercy of whatever she was told.

There is no vaccine for Hep C. Babies get the Hep B vaccine, and an extra dose wouldn’t cause any harm, which this woman should certainly understand. The person giving the shots made a dumb mistake that didn’t harm her child, so now she has decided to intentionally risk harming her children in response?

Perhaps there’s a reason she’s a “former nurse.”

I looked her up and some of the sites that she refers to include Mercola. That tells me everything I need to know about her.

I remember last week when someone put up the data and map for vaccination. There was a East West pattern, with east tending to vaccinate more. And across political lines.

Wonder why.

Don’t accept that framing: I would take autism over hearing loss in a second, but autism just does not happen by vaccines. It Just Does Not.

Sounds harsh, but I’ve been on too many groups where someone claims to have an autistic child, and it’s the Worst Thing In the World! (“The light went out of her eyes!” “She’s ruined!”) A parent might be frustrated, might be mad, but a parent Does Not Throw Her Own Kids Under The Bus the ways some of these parents of supposedly autistic children do.
