I do disagree that fetal homicide laws are a bad thing. Here in the US, they can and do include an abortion exception. The situation of El Salvador’s law is indeed a horror, but the answer to that here is not to pass such a law.

As for El Salvador, that’s a matter Americans should be careful in engaging. Best if we support local activists and don’t come across as trying to force change ourselves. If the demand for change is seen as local it may be embraced, but if its seen as coming from los Estados Unidos, El Salvadorians will likely dig in their heels against perceived “Yankee Imperialism!!1”.

GGT: You should update this page, as there was a second vote held and the second time Carmen “Guadalupe” Vasquez was indeed pardoned.

Note: I’m not saying “That makes it all better!”, because clearly it doesn’t. But her being pardoned is an improvement and a valid update.

As tragic as the story of “Gaudalupe” is (for multiple reasons), the story also reveals some serious corruption. For example, according to the original article:

Unfortunately for Guadalupe, the San Bartolo National Hospital is a public health clinic. Doctors took one look at her then called the police, who arrested her on suspicion of murder. All forms of abortion are illegal in El Salvador. And though there was no indication that Guadalupe, a mother of one, intentionally terminated her pregnancy, the doctors snitched her out to save themselves from any criminal liability. (Emphasis mine)

I will continue to focus on women’s issues all over the world. The United States does not exist in a vacuum.
