I can’t help noticing what’s missing from these recommendations — any hint of awareness that easy access to deadly firearms was the major cause of this atrocity.

But let’s make sure to lock the doors.

May I point out my title says at the school, and the subtitle has by my genuine disclaimer? It’s not as it there has been a lack of discussion of that gun control side of what does need to change.

Ordinary sensible measures deserve attention unburdened of the gun debate. Especially with the foolish proposition of teachers being routinely armed.

I’ll make one last pragmatic appeal for the value of not just locks but all the rest- Locks and custodians are not hindered by the Congress.

In the very same spirit of in addition to improved gun control, the lack of adequate medical help for the kids mental condition is worth noting for policy consideration. Improved public assistance for those with a mental state like Landas is worth a long look. His condition may well have been treatable. That fact adds to the tragedy. For his mom to keep guns in the house despite that untreated condition was a tragic error, another powerful lesson.

Actually, that’s because the Newtown Commission made its gun-grabbing recommendations a few weeks ago. This report was more about school security, and so they decided not to repeat their anti-gun proposals in this report.

“gun grabbing”

You are a fucking cliche.

But seriously, who hurt you?

No one hurt me, I simply view the Newtown Commission’s anti-gun proposals with hostility.

Bringing the gun debate into this is exactly what I sought to avoid.

Ordinary sensible measures deserve attention unburdened of the gun debate. Especially with the foolish proposition of teachers being routinely armed.

So what would it take to make that possible? Not one comment about the actual subject at hand. Safety Measures For and In The Schools.

You sought to avoid it, but Charles wanted to bring it in. It’s your page, but his site so he gets to do that.

I was regarding that as asked and answered. By myself. Charles left it there which clued me had had no major problem with my comment.

You know how proposals for better care for the mentally ill are taken as an excuse to not do gun control? Let’s turn that around. What if gun control becomes an excuse to not spend the money on the other recommendations? Now I don’t think that’s what’s up here at all. I just point it out for the purpose of showing why each part of the recommendation deserve attention apart from the others. Harden up schools. Train staff. Help for the mentally ill. And yes universal registration, and guns not being kept within reach/access by those not sane enough or criminally inclined. Etc.

The new gun-related proposals include requiring that any person seeking a license to sell or purchase a gun in Connecticut first passes a suitability screening process.

The report focuses heavily on the state’s mental health system, which it called “fragmented and underfunded” and “tainted by stigma.” The commission said the problems of the shooter, 20-year-old Adam Lanza, were “not reducible to any particular category of psychiatric illness,” but it is clear his needs were not met.

Looking through, it’s hard to resist that measures other than gun control simply are not all the welcome or taken seriously. If I came to that conclusion I’d have to ask why that is…. So I’ll just hope there is a better explanation.

Part of the explanation for many who are left-of-center (but not Charles, to be clear) is that they don’t want to bring up things that may cause fractures within their faction by saying things some in the faction don’t want to hear or that make make some in the faction look bad.

I often get criticized for having a “Go Team, Go!” mindset, but it occurs within both parties.

Yes, why don’t you two continue to pretend that this country doesn’t have a gun problem.
It’s not like mass shootings are a common thing here.
No sirree.
You just shut down any attempt to even begin to address it by yelling, ‘GUN GRABBERS!’

1. Leave RWC out of the part about gun grabbers. It was me that said it, not me.

2. Once gun politics enters the conversation regarding any sort of mass murder, they push everything else out of the discussion. RWC wanted to talk about other aspects of the Newtown Commission’s report and to keep the conversation focused on those other aspects he left the issue of guns out.

I’ll be insisting you provide a link for my alleged position “we don’t have a gun problem” Varek. Or please a retraction.

I think many people consider these other measures to be secondary and rather pointless until the primary issue of gun control has been dealt with.

What’s more valuable than our children? Nothing on this earth.

Except guns, apparently.
