Well, let’s hope this horrible incident causes the Wheels of Justice to turn in India. When a mob of people feel so strongly about a crime, I think it’s time for the law, enforcement of those law and the consequences of it them be re-examined.

Also, I hope this wasn’t a veiled form of xenophobia instead of outrage against a violent crime against a woman it seems to be.

That particular place is a frontier state. The tribes there are not Hindus, but rather animist and christians (and mixed belief systems). Due to its closeness with China, the central government has a presence there and bringing in people from other parts of India who are usually richer and more urbanized leaving the indigenious who choose to live in the cities socially and economically disadvantaged (and creates resentment against muslims and hindus and thus drives further the conversions to christianity). What happened here I believe is an example of ethnic strife and anger towards hindus/muslims.

Thanks for that info. Those facts make this look like the kind of lynching that went on in the US 80-100 years ago.

That’s more a hope than a likely explanation. The incidence of rape in India, the almost sneering indifference of the authorities to reports of assaults, and the tendency of the accused to get off even when caught and tried, all point to a pervasive cultural indifference to rape in India.

Now cometh an outsider, an illegal immigrant of a different language and religion and part of a mass of them that is putting economic pressure on the already desperately poor natives of the region.

And he’s the one who gets lynched. No doubt the crowd was genuinely angry about the rape. But how angry would they have been if the offender had been one of their own number?

Isn’t that what I said in my last sentence?
