First of all, let me say that Assemblyman Dov Hikind is an asshole wingnut of the first order. He has spoken at at least one of of Geller’s AFDI hate-fests (7th photo down, immediately after Geller). Also, as Google indicates, he’s very popular with the RWNJ blogs and Fox news, and he has ODS. Anything he has to say should be viewed in the context of where he’s coming from.

Hinkind says, “If they didn’t do anything wrong, no bad intentions, just come forward and we can put this behind us…” Come forward? If they’re from out of state they’re probably not even aware that people are freaking out over their picture taking. I mean seriously, when you go somewhere to take photos do you come home and spend the next couple of days scouring the newspapers and local TV news from wherever you were to see if your presence made anyone twitch? No? Neither do I, but apparently if you look Middle Eastern then you’re supposed to. Because, y’know, people might get nervous.

Good comment at Petapixel, but I would point out that the article says that police reported the out-of-state plates were “expired and possibly swapped,” so basically all the guys were guilty of was looking Middle Eastern, taking photos of some synagogues, and having expired out-of-state license plates. None of those things is sinister in and of themselves, and only the expired plates would be a crime (and a minor one at that), but it seems pretty clear that the (unspoken) assumption was that they were Muslim and therefore up to no good.

If the plates were indeed switched, then that would certainly be something to be concerned about, but that hasn’t been established—at least not in this article. I would also point out that that being of “Middle Eastern descent” could mean just about anything: Christian, Jewish. Muslim, Ahmadi, Druze, Yazidi, Mandean, Zoroastrian, Arab, Persian, Turk, Kurd, white, black, brown… the list goes on and on and on…

re: #1 CuriousLurker

Had a guy reply at petapixel that a news channel had dropped any mention of swapped plates. So I pointed out that then there is no reason at all to be seeking these men. *crickets*

Exactly as I suspected—they weren’t guilty of a damned thing except looking Middle Eastern (read Muslim). They didn’t come forward because they had no reason to think the police might be looking for them.

*SIGH*

Tourists Seen Photographing Synagogues Cleared of All Suspicion: Sources

The two men, whose identities were not released, had traveled in from Connecticut to have dinner with friends near the synagogues that evening when they decided to take a stroll around the neighborhood and take some photos before the meal, sources said. […]

On Monday evening, a tipster recognized the two men from the video reported their names to the NYPD, sources said.

NYPD detectives visited their homes in Connecticut and spoke to them, and corroborated their story about visiting friends in Midwood, officials said.

The men were released without charges and the event was deemed unsuspicious, police said. […]

The original CBS New York article that Petapixel linked to has also been updated and the title changed, but Petapixel hasn’t bothered to update theirs.

Police: No Crimes Committed In Photo, Video Incidents At Brooklyn Synagogues

Police sources told CBS2 the men were from Connecticut, and they were in Brooklyn just to meet friends for dinner. The men told police they had time to kill, and were just walking around taking pictures, sources said.

The men have no ties to terror groups, police sources said. They spoke to investigators voluntarily and police are satisfied with their explanation, sources said.
