Too bad the federal government would still be on the hook for disaster relief in states that don’t take precautions to prevent unnecessary destruction in the event of a catastrophic storm. Insurers are within their rights to only issue policies to entities that take appropriate preventative measures and when the government acts essentially a an insurer they should also be able to require preventative compliance.

“If a state has a climate denier governor that doesn’t want to accept a plan, that would risk mitigation work not getting done because of politics,”

This sort of reasoning should be familiar to red states on an abstract level, especially Florida. Lots of red governors and lawmakers want to mandate drug-testing for welfare recipients or just slash benefits because they heard on Buzzfeed that someone used food stamps to buy a lobster. FEMA is just throwing this same logic back at them: if you won’t use the money the way we think you’re supposed to, then no soup hand-out for you.

Will Rick Scott learn anything from this? … Nah.
