The First Ever Phantom 4K 1000FPS Drone Footage
Heck of a way to get a shot. But think about the old way. A real helicopter, a Panavision film camera and a real living crew on board.
Crashing and destroying your drone is painful on your wallet, but it’s not usually the cost of a house. The video above is different. It’s documents the first ever drone flight to involve a Phantom 4K camera mounted to an Aerigon UAV.
“The title of this will either be ‘The most technical advanced drone camera flight of all time,’ or ‘The quarter-million-dollar crash’,” says one team member.
The project was done by the Brain Farm Cinema team based out of Jackson, Wyoming.
The Phantom Flex 4K weighs 14 pounds without a lens or viewfinder attached, so it’s far too heavy to be carried by most of the popular drones used by casual photographers and filmmakers. By partnering with the drone manufacturer Intuitive Aerial, however, the team was able to put together an Aerigon that was up to the task. Lurker Lizard LeftWingConspirator clued me in to where these guys rented the camera and lenses. Story is they did not crash the drone but in fact ran up a pretty big gear damage bill.
Update II
Now that shows why I want us creative types to be able to really do breakthrough beautiful work. The cinematographer and director of photography people out there will make us glad we did. I did a little investigating and these guys were pushing the 55lb limit. But what we can fly at that weight is only going to get better and more affordable. Think way past Gopro. Or even medium format digital. Think about a whole new genre of cameras and adapted lenses being designed around the weight limit.
The drone weighs 24 lb’s. The Phantom Flex 15. Then lens and batteries. And these people are just getting started.
