Maryland Governor Calls in National Guard to Control Baltimore Riots
Cars and several buildings burned on Monday as police were attacked with rocks and bricks. Police teamed with firefighters to protect them against attacks and National Guard troops moved into the city overnight after being summoned by Maryland Governor Larry Hogan.
“I have not made this decision lightly,” Hogan said at a news conference. “The National Guard represents the last resort.”
The Baltimore violence, in response to the April 19 death of Freddie Gray, 25, follows protests in other cities such as Ferguson, Missouri, where blacks have died in encounters with law enforcement.
Rioters in Baltimore injured 15 officers, said Darryl De Sousa of the city’s police department. Police made 27 arrests, he said.
