Damn shame to see Cameron still around— but Labour (and England) have no one but themselves to blame. Even adding all the SNP seats to Labour wouldn’t have stopped the Tories reaching a majority.

Damn shame to see Cameron still around— but Labour (and England) have no one but themselves to blame. Even adding all the SNP seats to Labour wouldn’t have stopped the Tories reaching a majority.

Labor lost in large part because it didn’t have that much to offer. Money’s tight for the British government so the kinds of social program expansions that mainstream-left parties like to lead with aren’t all that viable. The major social program people over there seem to worry about, the National Health Service, is the one that David Cameron is very careful not to subject to problematic cutbacks.

Labor was also unwilling to propose not funding the UK’s next generation of ballistic missile submarines (the military abbreviation is SSBN), as was the SNP, simply because its a dangerous world and while an independent Scotland might be able to opt for the quiet life, England is simply too important and too high profile to do so.

The times right now favored the Tories in England and the SNP in Scotland.

DF, i love you but (as usual) couldn’t disagree more with you! :-D I’ll be back with a better answer soon— For now I’ll quote the part of your comment with which I completely agree:

Totally agree, but probably not for the reasons you do! Labour lost not because they couldn’t ‘offer handouts’ (a very american- and republican- way to look at it) but because they couldn’t (and didn’t ) offer a real alternative to the Tories, whereas the SNP could, and did. Did you know that the most searched question on google, after the debate (which Cameron shamefully skipped!) was, ‘Can I vote for the SNP if I live in England?’?

Jimmah and I are very happy with the Scotland results, but feel terrible for the people in England who voted Labour but woke up to a Tory government.

Thats how some see it, BUT - even the IFS says there’s room for modest increases in social spending. And that’s not counting the potential savings from getting rid of Trident. See Paul Krugman for more about the UK’s austerity lies.
