Bauer seems to be interviewing someone for a position as pope rather than president.

Not quite. He seems to have come up with questions for a presidential candidate in a much more socially conservative America. One where the religious right represents the majority and by enlarge votes for people in both parties. He fails to understand that liberals and progressives would be able to easily think up answers to most of his questions, and most of the time, they would only hurt democratic nominees with religious right voters, who most likely wouldn’t vote for them anyway.

It seems from a UK perspective that Americans have quite polarised views on abortion - wanting a ban is very extreme but so is supporting abortion on demand at a very late stage. I agree with your points about gay marriage and church attendance. Again - there’s a UK difference - two of the three traditional main parties who ran for election recently had openly atheist leaders which I can’t see happening in the US.

“When does life begin? And when does that life become a human person deserving of constitutional rights?”

1. Life on Earth began at least 3.5 billion years ago and hasn’t ended since.
2. Life of a particular organism can be roughly said to begin at conception. It is not clear-cut however, since e.g. two embryos can merge after the conception and then what were to be 2 organisms are now one (chimera).
3. It’s irrelevant when the organismal life begins (at least until there is objective evidence for the “soul” hypothesis), what is relevant is when the personhood begins.
4. There is no single point at which personhood begins, just as there is no single grain of sand that makes “several grains of sand” into a “heap of sand”. Look up sorites paradox.
5. That doesn’t mean that we can’t delimit a period of time during which a fetus cannot be a person.
6. To be a person one has to have a functioning cerebral cortex.
7. We know that there is no functioning cerebral cortex at least until the 20th week.
8. On this basis there can be no “personhood” objections to elective abortions until the 20th week.

Note how he brushes aside the questions asked of conservatives as being of the gotcha variety and then complains that his questions would be considered gotcha questions.
He also complains that gotcha questions aren’t relevant to the position the politician is running for but then asks: “When is the last time you attended a church to worship?” First, using “church” instead of the more generic “house of worship” is telling. Second, how is that “directly relevant to the duties of the office the candidate is seeking”?
Finally, he writes that asking someone what newspapers they read is a gotcha question (I guess he’s a Palin fan) but one of his questions is: “Which conservative publications do you read or news outlets do you consume?”

One really ironic thing about that, is that the United States was originally founded as secular nation.

re: #8 FemNaziBitch

Nice. I take it that was a reply to his questions about the candidate’s religion?
