It’s a good read, especially to understand the rise of “religious liberty” as the rallying point in the current GOP nomination process.

That article was downright prescient, given a year later how the language of the GOP has followed the same formula from the days of segregation. I’m not sure if Politico ran that piece out of filling space of if they thought the author would just stir up comments, but here now, a year later, I think it is clear that “religious liberty” is a cover term for lots of ugliness including, yes, racism.

I’m even suspicious of the unconscious connection… such as the wording in Mullah Mohler’s article title from last week:

The Gathering Storm: The Eclipse of Religious Liberty and the Threat of a New Dark Age

There is no doubt that Mohler is a theocrat. However, not all mullahs worldwide are theocrats, so “Mullah Mohler” is an unfair smear of Islam.

With respect to the article title, that is a dog whistle. A real new dark age (i.e., undoing the Enlightenment) is exactly what Mohler et al. want to achieve, so they couldn’t possibly view that as a threat.

They truly are one of the worst elements in American politics.

Fred Clark, of the Slacktivist blog, talked about this a couple years ago. He even refers to it as “the ‘biblical view’ that’s younger than the Happy Meal.”

Fascinating read. I really had no idea how evangelicals were actually okay with the Roe decision for the longest time. It really honestly is disgusting how they threw Carter under the bus. I am not a huge Jimmy Carter fan but the man actually did try to live by Christian principles as opposed ot Reagan who just kissed the religious right’s ass in exchange for votes and thus power.
