Considering the recent thefts of data from the Office of Personnel Management, along with other data breaches and plain mishandling of data, I’m more than a bit concerned about the gov becoming custodian to yet more data.

When strong encryption is outlawed, only outlaws will have strong encription.

(We already did this during the Clinton administration — why do we have to fight the same damn battles over again?)

We’re still battling over Social Security.

You don’t think there is a case to be made to be able to access the info (say, of a terror suspect) even with a signed warrant?

My understanding is that it is now totally impossible.

My understanding is that it is now totally impossible.

The problem is that once the feds have access, be it via backdoors or the ability to decrypt emails, it’s pretty much inevitable that criminals will get a hold of them as well. Case in point, from a comment I posted downstairs:

Office of Personnel Management Says Hackers Got Data of Millions of Individuals

WASHINGTON — The Office of Personnel Management revealed on Thursday that “sensitive information” of 21.5 million individuals was obtained last year by hackers who intruded into the federal personnel agency’s computer networks.

The agency said the incident was separate from, but related to, a previous breach that compromised the personnel data of 4.2 million federal employees. […]

They can’t protect their own data, but we’re supposed to trust them with ours? I’m not really feeling that. I’m pretty sure the latest 21.5 million aren’t either (note that the breach also included the spouses & cohabitants of those who had applied for background investigations).

We fight the same damn battles over and over because our body of applicable laws has grown so massive and so convoluted and vague that no one (and no subset of everyone) has enough lifetimes and motivation to read and understand them.
