I think any police administration must put absolute compliance with orders aside when a better and especially much more humane solution was applied. Let’s reward compassion over compliance.

I can see how you feel that way, but in this case I cannot concur. If the order was to wrongly use deadly force against a person, I’d agree entirely, but a wild animal is a different case. In such a case, given that the lower-ranked man would be covered by his superior ‘s having given the order if that order produced blowback, his duty is to obey said order. Ensuring the chain of command must come before compassion for an animal.

Again, if the order to use force concerned a human being it would be different.

Dark, I might agree if public safety was compromised or this went badly. Fact is it did not and the charge needs to be dropped. Better yet see my next page just published. LAPD should recruit this guy.

Dark, I disagree with your take on culpability. If you are given an unusual and morally wrong instruction, take a stand. Do your own thing or quit but don’t do the wrong thing on the basis you wouldn’t be liable.

You see everything in black and white when we live in a gray world. Humans have the ability to do critical thinking.

Blindly following orders is not always the best take - no matter what your role in society. It takes away all humanity. Compassion and empathy require thought. It is unfortunate that both are lacking from too many people.
