This is The Way Things Are: If you are a social movement that has associations with episodes of disorder, you can expect DoJ to keep tabs on you. And that goes double if you are highly critical of law enforcement, because that is the job of that department.

I want to add that people need to see government surveillance as more normal, because that is what it is becoming. As it gets easier for governments to keep an eye on people, they will keep eyes on more people.

And lastly, just because the great majority of a an activist organization is peaceful, doesn’t mean everyone it reaches is. It’s entirely possible for someone who was already unhinged to fixate on perceived (and sometimes actual) anti-police rhetoric and decide to attack law enforcement. Social media monitoring is part of how that is prevented.

If you characterize the blacklivesmatter movement as ‘anti-police’, you probably should read more about it. Also, I thought Republicans were against govt surveillance of citizens? I’m also not particularly troubled by *this* DOJ watching the protests, as a matter of fact, given the behavior of local law enforcement, I’d hope they were.

However, in the interests of fairness, I’d hope there was as much surveillance put into every one of the people at the Bundy ranch, at the Confederate Flag/KKK rallies, at Oathkeeper events, etc. They seem to have a higher propensity for violence against, y’know….people?

Also, this is from The Intercept. Do we know how accurate it is?

I take as good reason to look closely, with a probable suspicion point of view.

Dark that’s not how probable cause works, and i for one will insist that remain the line we hold. I will not stand by for intimidation of protest groups. Thats what Putin does, albeit on a far less extreme scale or method.

Again that’s not the appropriate legal standard.

Again that’s not the appropriate legal standard.

Probable cause is irrelevant. Per Wikpedia:

In United States criminal law, probable cause is the standard by which persons acting under the color of law has the grounds to obtain a warrant for, or as an exception to the warrant requirements for, making an arrest or conducting a personal or property search, etc. when criminal charges are being considered. It is also used to refer to the standard to which a grand jury believes that a crime has been committed in conjunction with a preponderance of the evidence. This term comes from the Fourth Amendment of the United States Constitution:

The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.
