The whole situation is insane. Francis’ only sin is that he isn’t a culture warrior. Most of his reforms are objectively small, when compared to what’s needed to do. And yet, his refusal to enable culture warriors have only enraged them.

From the article:

Just like President Obama loved apologizing for America, Pope Francis likes to apologize for the Catholic Church, thinking that the church is at its best when it is passive and not offending anyone’s sensibilities.

This made me laugh. It’s quite obvious their sensitivities got offended. But they feel their sensitivities are the right ones, and they want Francis to offend the wrong kind of sensitivities. You know, the others’.

You nailed it. Other popes have criticized the excesses of capitalism too. Francis A) doesn’t place a heavy focus on cultural issues like his predecessors did and B) actually seems to walk the talk a bit. It just amazes me how he’s made out to be this Marxist radical because he thinks and with good reason that greed is a problem. The conservatives who hate him just want a pointiff that wlil tell them how bad gays and abortion are and that they shouldn’t feel bad about poverty.

I guess it speaks to a sort of conservative narcissism. Anyone they disagree with must be a pretender to the office. Ideas they don’t like are the effort of dark forces to destroy them personally.

More than narcissism, I think it’s blind faith on the righteousness of their line of thinking. They can’t fathom the mere possibility of being wrong, because admitting that one detail is wrong, all of their cause might be equally invalid. Well, it does sound like narcissism after all.

At the very least, they just want someone who winks, nods, and turns a blind eye to such behavior from the bishops. Francis, while seems to be a very approachable person, is not someone to be crossed.

True, it’s how they read the Bible. It’s probably also why they think scientific theories are like houses of cards.
