How kewl is that?

Not only the idea, and implmentation, but the graph itself.

It’s rather beautiful, IMHO.

and, I learned a new Vocabulary word:

Newick format
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In mathematics, Newick tree format (or Newick notation or New Hampshire tree format) is a way of representing graph-theoretical trees with edge lengths using parentheses and commas. It was adopted by James Archie, William H. E. Day, Joseph Felsenstein, Wayne Maddison, Christopher Meacham, F. James Rohlf, and David Swofford, at two meetings in 1986, the second of which was at Newick’s restaurant in Dover, New Hampshire, US. The adopted format is a generalization of the format developed by Meacham in 1984 for the first tree-drawing programs in Felsenstein’s PHYLIP package.[1]

Not that I’ll remember it …

One thing we might note is that the fungi and plants develop together thanks to mycorrhizae, a symbiosis that allows for specialised nutrients synthesised by one kingdom to pass to the other, that animals rely on the the food created by photosynthesis and the enzymes of our gut flora to digest it, that plants require pollinators which in turn require nectar, etc. etc., that in fact the world of cells passing nutrients about is very much the one we live in. We need all this stuff, and we need to know about it!

Understanding the universe around us including the biota will give mankind a new purpose, one that is not about avoiding the wrath of a nepotistic God. So many times I have heard religious people imply that ‘if it’s all science and we’re animals there is no point in living’ - the presumption that ‘free will’ is any freer when we adopt a religious model. But it is incumbent on all of us to adopt a better ‘higher purpose’, to promote study and exploration of nature so that nobody can posit that our social structures are ever more important than a given species or that it is better to seek profit and thus sustain this generation than to safeguard the environment. I don’t especially want my life to be meaningful only to an immortal creator, nor to a profiteer with narrow ambitions. I want life to be something that continues because of our sense of responsibility and genuinely humble piety in the matter of life’s destruction.

(In time, those that scour these trees for missing links will come to notice that neither links nor gaps support the old theology. Let’s pray.)
