The Ghost of the Beardsman  Oct 19, 2015 • 10:46:03am

Provided for context by someone who knows a lot more abut Cap than I:

Steven Attewell: Why Abraham Riesman Doesn’t Know Jack About Captain America
Steven Attewell: Steve Rogers Isn’t Just Any Hero

My minor contribution would be to add that Captain America #1 depiction of punching Hitler was printed at a time when America wasn’t at war with Germany, and was specifically criticized by the German-American Bund. The idea that there’s some kind of recent “politicization” can only be maintained if you have paid zero attention, or aren’t interested in reality. This is likely (another) case of the latter by Fox.

The idea that comics are not political in general, or shouldn’t be political because they’re for kids, is fucking hogwash. There’s always been content that people would consider political because it commented on concepts and culture reflecting society. And Marvel in particular has used social issues as the backbones for stories for a very long time.

I grew up on 90s Xmen, for the record. There were sometimes terribly messy and melodramatic, but they also humanized things I’d never experienced.

If I may pimp my own stuff, here’s something I wrote over a decade ago when another wingnut moron whined about Captain America.

Wingnut worries. Imagine how incomprehensible this must be to a starving African or a Middle eastern refugee.
