It’s surprising how many Christian sects believe that all of the other Christian sects are going straight to hell.

Quite amusing, actually, except for the power these loons hold.

It’s only surprising if you see them as seekers of the path to God. If you see them more as a means to control people, it makes more sense.

It’s a not uncommon protestant belief due to some incredibly piss poorly written passages. OTOH, the Universalist church is only a tiny part of the UU church because, in a real way, they won. Most “Christians” (to include myself) believe in a version of Universalism which eliminates the need for a separate church.

That said, there are many christian cults that depend on the false teaching that only X number will be saved. This is simply one of them. May god have mercy on their souls…

To add to that too - Carson has been pretty clear that he believes us to be close to the End Times, a traditionally Adventist belief that didn’t become very prominent in mainstream Evangelicalism until the 1940s.

“But a central belief of the church is that most other Christian denominations will end up working with the devil.” Citation?

Don’t most denominations believe that their denomination is the best and brightest? I have no problem criticizing Dr. Carson (who I believe is totally unfitted for the Presidency) but I’m not sure why his religious beliefs deserve any extra criticism. All Christian denominations have unique beliefs which could be subjected to scrutiny (especially by atheists and the non-religious).

I don’t see how his church affiliation plays into his politics since there are liberal Seventh Day Adventists who don’t share his political views. He’s a member of a Christian denomination which is outside the mainstream but so what? If he were spouting the same nonsense but a Catholic or an Anglican, would that make any difference? It wouldn’t to me.

Maybe not best and brightest, but I don’t see how this differs, e.g., from the traditional Catholic or Orthodox teachings. IOW it’s traditional Christianity.

I attended a Seventh-day Adventist church for a little while in the late 1980’s - my brother was a lay pastor there. I wouldn’t consider anything I saw there to be very radical, but they are an odd bunch. Very anti-Catholic, on many occasions saw Chick tract level conspiracy literature being passed around. Very obsessed with body purity, they strongly encouraged vegetarianism and “natural” products and strict sexual morality.

But they were a very kind and accepting group; there was never any heavy pressure to conform, no fire and brimstone, no talk about being God’s chosen few in opposition to other protestants. The anti-Catholic stuff never came from the pulpit or church leaders. I felt much more at home there than at the evangelical or Baptist churches that I attended when I was younger. But I was never an official member.

It would’t bother me if a candidate were from an Adventist background or even practicing; of course I’d probably reject them if they came out believing anything like what Carson has said publicly.
