I taught in China for a short while. I would regularly ask my students if they had siblings. About 75 percent said they did. I’m not saying China didn’t have fines for having extra children, but I think the “only child society” that is portrayed as in American media is somewhat exaggerated, if not a myth. Not all countries work to dispel these myths if it makes them look good and in control.

Same with Japan. Japan does very little to dispel the “Japanese children are perfect students” myth. That myth mostly comes from Asian students in America who excel at a much higher rate. The story in Japan is very different, and I guess Japan feels no reason to dispel this myth.

There have been exceptions to the one-child policy since its inception. Rural couples could have two kids if the first was a girl. Minority groups were exempt. Families able to pay the fines could have more children (up to a point). Plus, it’s possible to bribe population control officers to look the other way and to conceal a pregnancy and send the kid to be raised by a childless relative.

One of my students here has three sisters, and she is from a Han majority family. I have many students with similar family situations, but the majority of my students are only children.

From a demographic standpoint, it’s a little too late to correct the male-female imbalance in China, but I will ensure a future supply of factory workers.

Altho I consider this development to be a good thing, I suspect that the largest social experiment ever is now underway. Interesting times.
