I just happened to stumble upon the Guardian article. Excellent read.

This is what soooo many people have been trying to get across and why I commented earlier that the Islamophobes are just as big a danger to our society as the jihadis because they help the jihadis recruit and they have the same goal—holy war.

From the article, emphasis added:

Everything convinces them that they are on the right path and, specifically, that there is a kind of apocalyptic process under way that will lead to a confrontation between an army of Muslims from all over the world and others, the crusaders, the Romans. They see everything as moving us down that road. Consequently, everything is a blessing from Allah.

With their news and social media interest, they will be noting everything that follows their murderous assault on Paris, and my guess is that right now the chant among them will be “We are winning”. They will be heartened by every sign of overreaction, of division, of fear, of racism, of xenophobia; they will be drawn to any examples of ugliness on social media.

Central to their world view is the belief that communities cannot live together with Muslims, and every day their antennae will be tuned towards finding supporting evidence. The pictures from Germany of people welcoming migrants will have been particularly troubling to them. Cohesion, tolerance - it is not what they want to see. […]

From Sun Tzu:

So in war, the way is to avoid what is strong and to strike at what is weak.

Daesh keeps striking us where we are weak and we keep striking them where they are strong. Not a winning formula.

re: #2 Romantic Heretic

Yeah, too many people seem to believe strength = brute (military) force. That couldn’t be farther from the truth in this case. Sure, wreaking vengeance feels satisfying in the short term, but it doesn’t solve the problem in the long term.

Hell, look at how long the Israelis & Palestinians have been going at each other. Nobody’s winning that war, yet they both keep repeating the same actions decade after decade as if, somehow, next time the outcome will be different and their side will “win” and live happily ever after. The grievances & resentments just keep piling up, each new one adding to the already deep distrust & anger.

Humanity doesn’t need to be locked in a similar battle on a global scale for the next hundred years (or more). We have a whole host of other vitally important things that need tending to if we’re to survive as a species.

Read this yesterday. It’s a fascinating read. Unity and engagement are how we can stop groups like Daesh. We can NOT treat Muslims or Islam like the enemy.
