I loved “Odessey and Oracle” when I was a teenager. But I have to say this performance was kind of disappointing. The vocals were really weak, shaky and out of tune.

Yeah, the vocals were less than expected, I posted purely for the music - they had their own sound that many others have tried to duplicate.

Yeah, can’t disagree on that. Just wanted to mention, though, that the presence of Darian Sahanaja piques my interest. He was in the Wondermints, and eventually that band sort of became the driving engine of the past 15 years of the Brian Wilson band. It may not have been perfect, but their enthusiasm, and I think Sahanaja is a huge part of that, led BW to a place where he was actually willing to confront and undertake a task that had been too daunting, even frightening, for decades—they put together a ‘finished’ version of SMiLE. That’s an unbelievable accomplishment; for some it may have underwhelmed in 2004, but if you listen to that knowing it would have been out there months and months before Sgt. Pepper, it’s something.

Because Sahanaja is out with the Zombies now, he wasn’t there when I saw Brian Wilson a few weeks ago when he played a couple of miles from my home (going to concerts is extremely difficult, but once a year or two I do try). That he wasn’t there, not that anyone would have been able to tell from that band, was the only small disappointment I took from that. The stage was well-represented by the other Wondermints still working with BW, though.

The Wondermints were no slouch, though they’ve missed the reissue train. It’s obviously way more Beach Boys than Zombies, but here is one of their highlights:

Wow! I checked their tour schedule. Guess I won’t be seeing them next year in Florida, their only U.S. event. I did start a new radio station on Iheart radio and the next song up was The Hollies, Long Cool Woman in a Red Dress. Blessed nostalgia.
