Saudi Women Vote for the First Time
It’s not easy to find a voter before the most closely watched election in Saudi Arabia’s history.
Only a relatively small fraction of Saudis will cast ballots Saturday in municipal-council races that will include women as candidates and voters for the first time.
But even the yawn does not detract from the potential significance of the vote.
The election is seen as a modest — but important — step in opening space for a greater public voice for Saudi women despite a host of other limitations, including the world’s only ban on women driving.
