The couple should have known this all along. I will state that I am a Catholic, though not very good at it. Sometimes I just don’t follow along. In this case however, the policy of the Church is quite clear and by trying to push the couple’s wishes ‘to prevent further pregnancies’ goes directly against the teachings and philosophy of Catholic Church..
Their doctor, if he was on staff, would/should have known this and most likely told the couple about the laws of this Catholic hospital.
If the couple are practicing Catholics then they would not have even requested this. I believe that this is a case of ‘pro-choice’, delving into areas where we will surely lose ground. They could easily had the c section someplace where they would not have put the Church and hospital in undeserved negative light.

Here’s the relevant part of the article:

Although Mercy Medical is one of three hospitals in Redding, it’s the only one with a labor and delivery ward. The next closest option is 70 miles away.

In a lot of places, these Catholic hospitals are the only option.

Sorry, but no, this is deserved negative light.

My ex almost died during her third pregnancy. The head of the OB/GYN department stated in no uncertain terms that another pregnancy would be a death sentence. She shouldn’t have the right to best medical care and a tubal instead of likely death?

The church has been expanding ownership of hospitals and for many patients proximity to the hospital and insurance limit or eliminate other options. Medical decisions should be made by physicians, not theologians, especially if the patients aren’t Catholic.

I do agree with many things stated. A catholic hospital would do a tubal in any case that was medically necessitated. If the couple had used just about any other reason, economic hardship, stress, unable to care properly anything other than a desire not to have any more children, this would have been performed, I think. But the reason, being a form of birth control does not meet the standards of the church.
I do not agree with that standard, but this must have been know to all parties, and this seems to be just reason to attempt to change a churches underpinnings.
Sometimes it would seem that the truth is not always the way to go, if it was not the purpose to begin with.
‘Cranky One’, any Catholic hospital; at least in the Boston area would quickly perform a Tubal Ligation if life was threatened.

But they have no problem with endangering a woman by requiring a second surgery to do it. Damn Catholics.

re: #4 danhenry1

This has nothing to do with attempting to change the church and everything to do with trying to obtain medical care, as decided between the patient and the doctor, in a way that reduces risk to the patient by not requiring a second round of surgery. The Catholic hospital is the only facility in the area that can accommodate that. It is a matter of access to healthcare not impeded by beliefs that the patient and the doctor do not share.

Guess what: all those factors you listed? Those are reasons people turn to birth control. So by the standard of “not allowing this to be done for birth control reasons,” those are all ruled out.

You can believe whatever you want. I’m not going to tell you as a Catholic that you need to use birth control. But you, as a Catholic, should have no right to tell me that I cannot have birth control, and my access should not be cut off just because the only hospital in the area is a Catholic one.*

* This is a hypothetical situation for me but not for millions of other women, and I am going to fight for them.

F ‘em. And since it’s the Catholic Church, you can be sure the decisions are made entirely by men. F ‘em.

Nice to see those compelling medical reasons …matter for absolutely nothing.
