New Ghostbusters Trailer Drops, MRAs Crap All Over SONY
The trailer for the all female Ghostbusters reboot was released today and if you are familiar with Gamergate and the ridiculous but suprisingly powerful “Men’s rights” movement you can probably guess what happened.
Currently the trailer stands at 56,000 dislikes to 37,000 likes. Youtube comments are always horrendous but in this case they’ve been especially bad. Sony has been actively deleting comments off the video all day but the misogynistic bastards keep coming back with a vengeance.
Some comments are complaining of ruined childhoods and creative missteps but the vast, VAST majority are from people pissing all over the new all-female cast. Not that this hasn’t been going on since the movie was first announced, but today’s trailer release kicked the misogyny up to 11. Do a quick Google search for “ghostbusters trailer feminist” and you’ll notice immediately I’m not the only one who picked up on this. I picked up on it the moment I saw the earlier comments at 10 this morning when I watched the trailer for the first time.
I am one of the biggest Ghostbuters fans around. I love the first two movies, I use to own all the action figures. A Lego ECTO-1 sits on my desk at work. I’ve long since accepted there won’t be a true third Ghostbusters movie. Harold Ramis is no longer with us and the most of the other original cast is well into their 60s. It’s easy for me to look at this new movie through the lens of the 1984 original and say “What the fuck?” but I realize that is 2016. A lot of things change in 30 years. America has changed. Our culture has changed. And of course, movies have changed.
Personally, I’m not sure an ALL female cast was the way to go. Not because I have any problem with women, but because it feels a bit too gimmicky to me. Why couldn’t we have two men and two women instead? Regardless, I’m not about to crap all over Sony for that particular decision. I’m also going to reserve judgment on the movie until I see it.
There are plenty of great discussions we could have about the creative decisions that have happened in the Ghostbusters franchise but when they degenerate into complaints about “fat ugly chicks” what’s the point?
Once again these MRA nutbars ruin the day. Will they ever give up?
