Personally, I think it’s all theater—a scripted “reality” show. This seems to be what America wants & is willing to pay for nowadays, so that’s what they give us.

IFAIC we no longer have a Fourth Estate, which is why whenever I come across an important or OUTRAGEOUS™ news story that doesn’t immediately seem plausible, I assume it’s a distortion of some sort (partisan framing, clickbait, whatever) until I’ve read several reports from different sources in an attempt to suss out what the story is really about. A lot of times it’s a big nothing-burger or some nonsense invented out of whole cloth.

Sure there are still some reporters who are actual journalists with professional ethics, but not enough of them and they don’t typically get the level of attention that the hacks & carnival barkers do.

It’s depressing and it wastes a lot of my time, time that I’d otherwise spend doing something more constructive or enjoyable.

re: #1 CuriousLurker
Theater indeed.
When news got folded into entertainment divisions of the broadcast corps, we slipped onto a slope. When 24 hr news came around, the slope got steep. Then we had the big mergers and the slope went vertical. No history on the History channel, MTV abandoned music, Nat’l Geo TV had Ancient Aliens. Now they all chase vanishing ad dollars as we stream.

if you think about it we always wanted our news on our own schedule. The fact we could not have that shaped our culture in ways both obvious and sublime. 24hr programming was a pre streaming infrastructure stab at it. Always On. Now we record it or just grab it the moment we want it. Twitter on phone for headline news. And its better than Headline News. On Demand anything. Anytime. Any device. But Oh My God talk about buyer beware. Wild woolly trans formative and therefore distorted markets. for TV, news, movies and sports. Ergo Trump. Old media chasing contemporary media dollars.
