I would never expect this take to come from Red State.

I read it carefully to make sure there wasn’t some kind of caveat, but it’s the real deal. I haven’t read through the comments, but I suspect the reaction there is not favorable.

Irrespective of how the comments go on RedState, this is a very clear reminder (and one I think is necessary) that just because we oppose a certain ideology, that doesn’t mean its adherents are incapable of self-examination and honesty. The Battle of the Blue and the Red thunders 24/7/365 on the Internet, and I have been a too-willing foot soldier on many occasions where the art of listening might have been more in order.

There are certain conservative positions that are both considered and thoughtful, yet I know I am prone to jerk the knee rather than engage with good faith. We all at times are bewildered at just who those people are, at the lunacy of their thought processes, instead of stopping, considering, and maybe giving a little credit for a reasonable idea reasonably expressed.

I realize that when I’m talking, I’m probably fucking up. The better course may be to shut up and hear the other side out. That doesn’t mean I have to agree - usually I won’t. But it would greatly assist matters if I stopped to think just what I was disagreeing with. The writer of the above has shown the ability to move more than halfway toward insight. None of us should do any less.

Call me cynical, but I’m pretty skeptical about this. If Hillary Clinton is elected, people like Leon Wolf are going to be even crazier than ever.

I’d like to be wrong about this, but I don’t think I am.
