Primaries Offer Hope in Kansas for Good Changes
Independents should show up on Aug. 2 and register as Republicans — hopefully casting their ballots for the candidates listed at the end of this column. After the election, they are free to disaffiliate or change affiliation on or after Sept. 1. A third of all registered voters in Johnson County are independents. If they choose to remain unaffiliated in this crucial election, they basically have surrendered their right to effect state government. November’s general election will be too late.
Ronnie Metsker, Johnson County election commissioner, said he does not expect an overwhelming primary turnout. A low turnout would be a travesty, given the stakes in this election. Low turnouts almost guarantee the extremists will win.
