Our media is failing us miserably. So sorry to see this. OMG

Interesting Times  Aug 14, 2016 • 9:33:30pm
You know what really worries me? That this could be a new Da’esh-inspired tactic aimed at alienating American Muslims.

That was the EXACT thought I had - if the imam had spoken out against extremism, or if he’d reported a member for suspected radicalization, this could be payback :(

Turns out the imam was indeed big on peaceful coexistence & education. The NY Times has a new article up on his background that provides quite a bit of info:

Mr. Akonjee’s life in the district of Habiganj, Bangladesh, had been built around education. After he completed a graduate degree, he became the founding principal of an Islamic school built on land donated by local villagers.

After more than a decade, he did not want to leave that position, Fayez Uddin Akonjee said, but word had spread of his eminence. He was asked to be an imam to broker peace between the Sunni and Wahhabi members of a mosque within the local railway department. Not long after, his son said, “the conflict had gone.”

That second paragraph worries me, especially in light of the recent murders by extremists in Bangladesh. People need to NOT bring their disputes over here, regardless of what they’re fighting about. BTW, links to the above as well as a couple of other new articles are listed under “Update.”

This whole situation really sucks. :-(

Peacemakers are a threat to terrorists. They undermine at the most basic level what killers seek to do. Empathy and kindness is what stops hate. Be careful CL.

Update here, person of interest being questioned:

Thanks, I was just looking for updates and reading the latest from the NY Daily News—they seem to be the ones who’ve really been on top of the story since the get-go. Gonna update my page in a few minutes.

Sketch of killer

[Embedded content]

The sketch was kind of frustrating in that he could’ve been almost anything with his reported medium skin tone and the dark eyes & hair—Hispanic, Pakistani, Arab, etc.—basically any olive-skinned male with an ethnicity stretching from the Americas, to the Mediterranean, to South Asia.

My latest gripe is that in the NY Daily News article I’m getting ready to add as an update is they say the killer “may have been settling a score in a feud between Muslims and Hispanics”. The alleged feud is described twice three times as being between Muslims and Hispanics—why do they do that—why bring religion into it if they don’t think it had anything to do with religion? Why not say is was an alleged feud between Bangladeshis and Hispanics or South Asians and Hispanics? Note that the Hispanics aren’t being identified by their religion.

It may seem like the descriptions are a small thing, like I’m nit-picking, but words matter because they leave an impression. If this wasn’t about the victims’ religion, then FFS stop identifying one group of people in an alleged feud by their religion.
