Amen to that. People tend to talk about the horrors of war and issues like immigration in a very detached, almost clinical way, pushing aside thoughts of the blood, pain, terror and loss that we (intellectually) know full well accompanies war.

Still, some images, like the one of this poor helpless, innocent and utterly silent little boy manage to shatter that detachment, to pierce the protective barriers we build in our minds and around our hearts to keep such feelings out, even if only temporarily. Suddenly these vaguely threatening “others” become us—our children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews—no longer distant strangers that have nothing to do with us. Suddenly we can feel again—we’re forced to feel—and we’re horrified.

We would do well to be more mindful of others’ suffering on regular basis as there are millions of people suffering the horrors of war around the world and many of them are children. They are children with names that may sound strange to our ears, but are nonetheless children whose families love & cherish them, who deserve a future, who—like our own children—deserve to feel happy & safe, to be protected instead of terrorized & brutalized.
