Even Chuck Todd Loses It Over Right-Wing Love for Putin
I grew up in a military family. Father was an officer, uncles all served, cousins, neighbors, you name it. I spent many hours on military bases, wandering around the post by myself, clambering over the heavy equipment and reading the displays (including the chilling one showing off the Civil War-era medical equipment that even to me, looked like something lumberjacks should use).
In those days, the main threat was from the Soviet Union, and we all lived every day expecting to hear the sirens wail as the MIRVs rained down in World War III. The Russians were the “Evil Empire,” and we would pay any price, bear any burden, to prevent their left-wing ideology from coming to these shores.
Thus, it is utterly surreal to me the degree to which right-wing conservative Republicans now have a chubby for Vladimir Putin, a communist dictator.
Watch Chuck Todd try to break this down, while the wiring in his head shorts out:
“I think it’s — it’s going to be a bridge too far for some,” he said. “I am surprised that it hasn’t happened yet. But my goodness. How much smoke do we have to see here? It is just mind-boggling, all of this cozyingy up and playing nice with Putin. Four years ago, the entire Republican Party came down heavy on President Obama, because they thought he wasn’t taking the threat of Putin’s Russia.”
Is this as far as the rabbit hole goes? Does the racist deranged hatred of black people overrule their hatred and fear of communism? Or is it just that the RWNJs now live in an entirely fact-free universe, where they just look to Rush and Ingraham and Coulter and Hannnity and Trump to tell them who to hate today?
We joke. But have we really arrived at the blind “Two Minutes Hate” stage of our existence as a society?
