in Jim Cooley’s Open-Carry America, Even a Trip to Walmart Can Require an AR-15
Do you remember Jim Cooley, the open-carry advocate who made the news last year for bringing a rifle into Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport? Terrence McCoy wrote a story about him in the Washington Post on Saturday. Mr. Cooley became obsessed with protecting his family after losing his job, declaring multiple bankruptcies, and suffering a disabling heart attack. Of course in today’s America, that means carrying a firearm wherever one goes, even to Wal-mart. This insidious paranoia led him to buy a $580 rifle after going into significant debt from the heart attack. Mr. Cooley even has security cameras in his van, his fear is so great. Maria, his wife, is caught up in all this, resigned to the fact that her husband has defined his manhood in this way.
So much of her life involves accommodating him now, including just before they left for Walmart and he asked her to send a Facebook message to a local deputy about his plans. “What do you want me to tell him?” Maria had asked.
The first photo in the story shows Mr. Cooley drinking a can of soda while carrying his rifle. He’s wearing a Trump campaign T-shirt. Naturally.
